At Cornerstone Civil Engineering, our Principal Engineer Hollis Allen approaches each day of work as its own project. Each day involves creating a strategy on how best to tackle the work at hand, with an organized attention to the details of what needs to be accomplished.
1. The Daily Grind
Like other professions, a civil engineer (CE) encounters aspects of a workflow that need daily attention. A CE always has time management in the back of their mind, as a key element and a reflection of overall project management. At Cornerstone, we are a small, focused team, and we encourage frequent team communication to ensure all aspects of a project are on track. That daily communication extends to project owners and may also include other related parties, such as city officials or surveyors.
2. Keeping Things Interesting
Civil engineering differs from some other professions in that the day-to-day workload can vary widely, depending on the various stages of a project. In a planning phase, a CE may spend a majority of their workday on one project, researching the potential environmental impact of water drainage or creating a better solution to a roadway that is seeing increased traffic. Later on, implementing this planning to bring the project to life may require a CE to be in the field, observing the execution of construction. In this stage, issues may arise that could slow down construction, so the day must often be rearranged to prioritize solving those problems in an efficient and organized manner.
3. Leaving Room for Others
Whatever the day brings to Cornerstone, expected or otherwise, our team consistently seeks out opportunities to help others. That may be partnering with our own teammates to create solutions, knowing that collaboration strengthens our work. It may also be taking a few extra minutes to talk with an owner about their changing priorities as a project evolves, finding the best way to save time or money. We put our best foot forward on every project by putting our project owners’ best interests at the forefront, letting exceeded expectations and completed goals pave the way for clients to return and share with others how we were able to serve them well.
Civil engineering is an exciting field full of areas to improve and problems to solve, which takes creativity and flexibility. While a typical day may begin in a routine manner, we know that a simple phone call can bring a new project to life, and we are thankful to have the opportunity to meet those needs. At Cornerstone, our workday is only complete when we have successfully addressed issues for our clients to help them achieve their goals. We can then be satisfied, be proud of our work, and be ready to tackle the next day.
